Inadequately controlled diabetes costs the world more than US$800 million and 1·5 million deaths annually.1 Although the diabetologist's armamentarium has expanded to include many distinct classes of antidiabetic agents, inequities in access to diabetes treatments continue to pose a major roadblock to appropriate care worldwide.
